New Zealand’s Black Ferns made history in 2022 by becoming the first host nation to win a Women’s Rugby World Cup, but it was the way they approached the biggest tournament of their lives that won over fans around the world. Facing a rampant England side, at the time on a remarkable run of 30 test wins in a row, New Zealand lined up at Eden Park – as they did for every one of their games – with huge smiles on their faces. Belting out their national anthem with pride, their energy and enjoyment for the game, their teammates, and the situation shone through, regardless of the stakes.
