2020 Sports Event Tracker
Two Circles analysts tracked the number of sports events taking place globally against an originally-scheduled, pre-Covid-19 sporting calendar. Only events for professional, competitive sports events with a projected paid ticketed attendance of at least 5,000 (pre-Covid-19) were considered.
2020 Global Sports Calendar (Number of Weekly Events)
Covid-19 rocked the entire world in 2020, and sport was no exception – professional sports events all but stopping globally from March through to June, before rising dramatically in number from July as rights-owners looked to make up for lost games.
Throughout the year, Two Circles tracked sport’s return to action in different countries, analysed how and when they were able to come back, and analysed how this looked against the original, pre-Covid-19 schedule.
For an overview of sports events across 2020, see our global sports calendar above. For in-depth analysis on different countries from June to August 2020 – as sport started to get back to ‘normality’ – take a look through our individual sports tracker updates below.
The NBA and NHL play-offs will coincide with the start of the European football season this year – pushing the number of weekly sports events above the number originally scheduled pre-Covid for the first time.
